Argentina into last eight
Federico Delbonis beat Thomaz Bellucci on Monday to book Argentina’s passage into the Davis Cup quarter-finals.
In a tie held over from the weekend after darkness halted play on Sunday evening in Tecnopolis, Argentina completed their comeback from 2-1 down courtesy of Delbonis’ 6-3 3-6 6-2 7-5 victory over his Brazilian foe.
Leonardo Mayer had kept his side’s hopes alive on Sunday with a marathon six-hour-and-43-minute win over Joao Souza – the longest singles match in Davis Cup history.
That meant only one set of the final rubber was completed before the light faded and so the players had to return on Monday.
Bellucci started the new day well enough, winning the second set to level the contest. However, it was Delbonis who emerged victorious by taking the next two sets, sending Argentina through to a home quarter-final against favourites Serbia.
